“What is your theoretical approach?”
My formal training was Integrative, encompassing all the main theoretical approaches. However, I was drawn to Person Centred Counselling. The therapist listens carefully to the client, and seeks to understand their feelings, thoughts and experiences. Through this kind of empathic relationship, the therapist can act as a mirror and facilitator to the client, enabling them to become aware of, and to change, repeated difficult patterns of feeling, thinking and behaviour. In equal measure, I also work with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and I have extensive knowledge and experience in these areas, of which I incorporate all approaches as appropriate.
“What happens in the initial session?”
The initial session is a space and opportunity for you to talk about the presenting issues along with some background information about yourself. We can discuss what you hope to achieve and decide on a focus for future sessions. You can expect me to listen carefully (actively), to what you say, and occasionally check out with you my understanding of your issue(s).
"I am concerned that things I talk about in the session may be disclosed to others?”
Anything that is discussed in a session remains confidential, and is not disclosed to any other party. However, all counsellors are required to be in regular supervision in accordance with the Ethical Framework set by the BACP. Any notes kept by myself remain confidential, and are safely locked away. Confidentiality may only be breached if a client tells me that they may harm themselves, or others. However, in this rare event, discussion with the client takes place prior to this happening.
"How long do sessions last?”
The initial assessment session is 60 minutes. Each subsequent counselling session is 50 minutes in length.
"How often should I come for counselling?”
Weekly sessions are important to facilitate the counselling process.
"What is Your Value Statement?"
I strongly value honesty, integrity, ethics, and individual differences. I fully believe people can be empowered, in order for them to find their own truths, and answers. Ultimately, everyone needs to find their own path, allowing them to stand out from the crowd.
